Transforming a Prairie Village Home: A Stunning Front and Backyard Makeover
At Third Space Design Build, we recently had the pleasure of transforming a beautiful property in Prairie Village, Kansas and we're excited to share the details of this project with you!
We started by enhancing the front yard with over 100 carefully selected plants, adding a burst of color and texture to the landscape. To create a natural, grounded feel, we installed mossy rock boulders within the landscape beds. These were complemented by Java Brown mulch, which not only enhances the visual appeal but also helps retain moisture and minimize weeds in the landscape beds.
To define the space and create clean lines, we installed 4"x4" gray stone edging along the front beds, seamlessly integrating it with the gray decomposed granite used for the front and side walkway areas. This combination of materials created a sophisticated and welcoming entrance to the home.
Backyard Oasis: Moving to the backyard, we added compost to all the new landscape beds, preparing them for the installation of over 200 vibrant plants and trees. The boxwoods along the perimeter of the beds frames the entire space nicely, the other plants were a selection of native perennial flowers and native grasses. These plants will be very low maintenance and will require very little watering once established. Just like in the front yard, we used Java Brown mulch and 4"x4" gray stone edging to tie the design together. We also installed gray decomposed granite for the walkway areas, creating a cohesive and elegant look throughout the space.
The back concrete patio steps down onto a lower concrete stepper patio with decomposed granite between the concrete patio joints. This is a fun and clean aesthetic and complements the mid-century vibes of the home.
To ensure the landscape remains lush and green we installed a state-of-the-art irrigation system. This included a Rachio Wi-Fi controller, which allows for easy programming and control, ensuring each plant receives the right amount of water. The system features four turf zones and four landscape bed zones, with Hunter/Rainbird rotors and spray heads, and Hunter 1" valves on each zone.
To help keep water away from the foundation we extended and buried four downspouts on the backside of the house
Finishing Touches: To complete the backyard transformation, we installed a horizontal cedar fence with three 4-foot wide gates, providing both privacy and a modern aesthetic. Finally, we installed fresh fesuce sod, creating a lush green lawn that ties the entire landscape together.
